A louvered roof handles what comes from above. On many Austin commercial patios, the harder problems come from the side: low western sun at dinner service, mosquitoes after a wet week, wind across an open rooftop, or a parking lot view nobody wants to look at. Azenco Outdoor builds side-enclosure options for that, and planning them with the pergola costs far less than adding them later.

This post covers Azenco's three published options and how they fit Austin project types. Specifications come from Azenco Outdoor's privacy options page and its Integrated Screens page.

Option 1: Integrated motorized screens

Azenco's Integrated Screens are motorized screens developed with MagnaTrack and built into the structure rather than bolted on afterward. Azenco lists them for the R-BLADE motorized louvered pergola and the R-SHADE. Azenco describes the mesh screens as giving shade, airflow, and bug protection.

Published configuration details:

  • Works on attached and free-standing structures.
  • Works in single-zone and multi-zone layouts.
  • Compatible with corner posts or cantilever posts.
  • Housing is required on all sides.
  • Supports Gaposa controls and Bond integration, so screens can run from the same app and controls as the roof.

The housing requirement matters during design. Because the screen system is part of the frame, it has to be in the order from the start. That is the main reason to decide on screens before the pergola is drawn, not after it is installed.

Where screens earn their keep in Austin

  • West-facing dining patios. Lowering a screen on the sun side can keep evening seating usable when the sun is too low for the roof to block.
  • Bug-prone evenings. Patios near creeks, retention ponds, or heavy landscaping, where mosquitoes cut evening stays short.
  • Event and private-dining space. Hotels and venues that want to turn an open patio into a defined room for a booked party.

Option 2: Fixed privacy wall

The fixed privacy wall is a permanent architectural panel. Azenco offers it with or without a gap between slats; the gapped version has a 1.7-inch gap. An optional 2-inch by 6.5-inch center beam allows a TV to be mounted. Azenco lists a maximum height under the beam of 177 inches and a maximum length between posts of 168 inches.

Fixed walls suit sides that should always be closed: a service alley, a neighboring building, a dumpster enclosure, or a pool deck edge facing a street.

Option 3: Operable privacy wall

The operable privacy wall gives the look of a wall with the ability to open it. Azenco lists the same 177-inch maximum height under the beam, with a shorter 120-inch maximum length between posts. It fits sides where you want privacy some of the time and a view the rest.

Azenco states the privacy collection is built from 6063-T6 aluminum with powder coating that meets AAMA 2604, in standard or custom colors, so walls can match the pergola frame.

Wind and weather planning

Azenco publishes its 190 mph wind rating for the pergola structure itself. It does not list a separate wind rating for the screens, so treat screens as something you raise in high wind, not as storm protection. Azenco's pergola weather sensors can respond to rain and high wind for the louvers. Ask during design how screen operation will be handled when storms roll through. Central Texas storms can arrive fast, and the National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio office is the place to check local warnings.

Matching options to project types

  • Restaurant patio: R-BLADE roof, integrated screens on the sun side and street side, fixed wall at the service side.
  • Hotel or rooftop lounge: R-BLADE with screens on all sides for private events, plus an operable wall where the view matters.
  • Multifamily or HOA pool deck: Fixed privacy walls toward neighbors or parking, open sides toward the pool.
  • Office courtyard: Operable walls between seating zones, so one courtyard can host small meetings and open gatherings.

Permits and electrical

Motorized screens add power and control wiring, and walls change how the structure reads in plan review. For commercial property, confirm requirements with Austin Development Services Commercial Plan Review and your design professional. Including enclosures in the first set of drawings avoids a revision later.

Frequently asked questions

Which Azenco pergolas work with Integrated Screens?

Azenco lists its Integrated Screens, developed with MagnaTrack, for the R-BLADE and R-SHADE. They work on attached or free-standing structures and in single-zone or multi-zone layouts.

Can screens be added after the pergola is installed?

Integrated Screens are designed into the structure, and Azenco states housing is required on all sides. Plan them with the original order rather than as a later add-on.

How large can an Azenco privacy wall be?

Azenco lists a maximum height under the beam of 177 inches for both the fixed and operable privacy walls. Maximum length between posts is 168 inches for the fixed wall and 120 inches for the operable wall.

Do the screens have the same wind rating as the pergola?

Azenco publishes its 190 mph wind rating for the pergola structure and does not list a separate wind rating for screens. Plan to raise screens in high wind.
