Every time a gutter clogs on a commercial building, someone has to go to the roof edge or up a ladder to clear it. On a single-story retail building that is routine. On a two- or three-story multifamily property, an office building, or a warehouse with a high eave, it is work at height, and work at height is where serious injuries happen.

This post looks at gutter cleaning as a safety exposure, what federal and Texas safety sources say about falls, and how Sasquatch gutter protection fits into a property's plan.

Why falls deserve attention

Falls remain the leading work-related cause of death in construction, according to NIOSH. The Texas Department of Insurance reports that falls caused 37% of construction deaths in 2021 and lists fall protection first among its prevention tips.

OSHA generally requires fall protection at 4 feet in general industry workplaces and 6 feet in construction (OSHA). Gutter work on most commercial buildings is well above those heights.

Gutter cleaning is not the biggest source of falls, but it is a repeated task at the roof edge. Each trip involves a ladder or roof access, equipment, and a worker near an unprotected edge. Fewer unplanned trips means fewer chances for something to go wrong.

Where unplanned trips come from

The riskiest gutter work is usually the unplanned kind:

  • Storm-day overflow calls. Water sheeting over an entry during a downpour, and a maintenance tech sent up in wet, windy conditions.
  • Seasonal clogs. Leaf drop, seed pods, or pollen filling gutters under trees between scheduled cleanings.
  • Rushed fixes. A quick clear-out by staff who are not set up for roof-edge work.

Planned work can be scheduled for good weather with the right crew and equipment. Unplanned work tends to happen at the worst time.

What Sasquatch changes

Sasquatch is E-Z Gutter Guard's hangerless gutter protection system. It is a cover for the gutter, not a gutter. It locks into the gutter's front hem and fastens through a patent-pending rear screw ledge directly to the fascia (E-Z Gutter Guard).

By keeping leaves and debris out of the gutter, a cover reduces the clogs that trigger the unplanned trips described above. It does not mean the roof edge never needs attention. Debris can still collect on top of a cover, downspouts and outlets still need checking, and gutters still need periodic inspection. The goal is to move gutter work from emergency calls to planned visits.

Product details for Texas commercial jobs:

  • 5-inch and 6-inch widths to match the gutter, in 7.5-foot lengths, black finish.
  • .019-inch high-strength aluminum standard, or .022-inch Arctic Extreme heavy-duty.
  • Meets ASTM E2768 for flame spread and ASTM E2886 for ember intrusion.
  • Lifetime limited transferable warranty.

Building gutter protection into the safety plan

  1. List the high-exposure elevations. Gutters above the second story, over entries, or under heavy tree canopy.
  2. Cover those first. Prioritize the elevations that generate the most unplanned calls.
  3. Schedule inspections. Set planned checks for good-weather days rather than waiting for overflow.
  4. Use qualified crews. Roof-edge work, including installation, should be done by contractors set up with proper fall protection and training.
  5. Track calls. Compare overflow and cleanout calls before and after covering a building to see what changed.

Plan around Texas weather

Texas weather adds its own risk to roof-edge work. Wet roofs, gusty fronts, and summer heat all make ladder and edge work harder. When gutter visits are planned rather than reactive, the property team can pick calm, dry days and cooler morning hours, and avoid sending anyone up during a storm. That scheduling control is one of the main practical benefits of reducing clog-driven calls.

Installation is work at height too

Installing gutter protection is itself roof-edge work. Hire roofing or gutter contractors with a written fall protection program and the right equipment. A one-time planned installation by a qualified crew is a better trade than repeated unplanned trips by whoever is available.

Frequently asked questions

Does gutter protection eliminate gutter maintenance?

No. A cover keeps debris out of the gutter, which reduces clogs, but gutters, downspouts, and the cover surface still need periodic inspection.

At what height does OSHA require fall protection?

OSHA generally requires fall protection at 4 feet in general industry workplaces and 6 feet in construction. Check the standard that applies to your work.

Which gutters should be covered first?

Start with high elevations, gutters over entries, and runs under heavy tree canopy, since those tend to generate the most unplanned roof-edge calls.

Who should install Sasquatch on a commercial building?

A roofing or gutter contractor with a written fall protection program, trained crews, and the right equipment for the building height.

Managing Texas commercial, multifamily, or HOA properties with high or hard-to-reach gutters? Use the CCSI contact form and include the property address and the elevations that cause the most calls. See the full CCSI E-Z Gutter Guard product line.
